Selection



Selection is the process of picking the most-applicable person for filling the job vacancy according to the predetermined criteria (Knowledge, Skills, and Experience, etc.).This process can be vary from simple to complex process according to the hiring process and job position. (Tutorials Points, 2016).

Preliminary interview- In this step remove the candidates who are not suitable for the further selection process due to they do not meet the expected criteria (skills, background, educational qualifications, etc. for the job.

Receiving applications – Candidates who are selected from the preliminary interview are required to fill the application in a given format including age, qualifications etc.in order to be more aware about candidates.

Screening applications – Shortlisting the received applications according to the given criteria.

Employment test- Different kind of test held in order to identify the employees’ mental and skill capabilities.

Well-designed employee selection test includes three main characteristics such as standardization, validity, and reliability.

Selection interview- In order to get the more information about candidates and clear picture about he or she held different kind of interviews. It is helpful to know about applicants’expectations from the job and their communication skills.

Checking references/background investigation Organizations check candidates’ background and behavior, previous employment details, and validity of the information that has provided by the candidate through their educational institutes, previous employment, etc. Reference checking is basically done through telephone conversation,formal letters etc.


Medical exam- Medical tests held in order to identify the candidates’ physical and mental ability to perform the job.


Final selection- Ultimately, select the most suitable and qualified candidate for the job vacancy who pass the all the rounds of the selection process by offering letter of appointment (Business Jargons, 2020) (Chand, 2020)




  • Be organized and unbiased – Selection process must be designed in a planned and systematic manner and each and every candidate must be equally and fairly treated throughout the selection process.

  • Carefully identify the selection methods - identify the best selection method for each job position according to the depth of post, personal characteristics, required criteria, etc.

  • Carefully record the selection details – Need to note down and report each details of each candidate in order to make further selection process easier and ensure reliability.

  • Making hiring decisions based on proper evidence

  • Using best selectors with proper skills (Bright HR, 2020)
